In 1982 Jim Penman, flat broke and having failed to launch a career in academia, started a lawn mowing business by delivering 1,000 leaflets to local letter boxes. Twenty five years later there are 20 Jim’s Divisions comprising 2600 plus franchises in Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the UK providing work for around 4,000 people world wide. Together the franchise group has an annual turnover of around $200 million.
Commenting on the 25th anniversary, Jim Penman who still controls 100% of the national franchisor, says: ‘Our success* comes from our primary focus on franchisee satisfaction and success. ‘Testament to this is the fact that there are at least 20 Jim’s millionaires who started out as franchisees, with the top Jim’s franchisee last year turning over $2.5 million”.
Divisions with more than 20 franchisees include Antennas, Book-keeping, Building Maintenance, Cleaning, Computing, Dog Wash, Fencing, Mowing, Paving and Test and Tag. Jim’s Mowing remains the largest division and in 2007, Financial Review’s Smart Investor, after examining 600 franchises in Australia, voted it No 1 franchise for under $50,000. A Jim’s Group franchise can cost from $6,000 to $100,000 or more. All divisions except Mowing are joint ventures with franchisors who specialize in each industry.
