Franchisors are responsible for running advertising campaigns in their area. These mostly consist of various forms of classified advertising such as local Yellow Pages and local papers. Divisional Franchisors and Marketing at National can provide ideas and templates, though Franchisors are encouraged to experiment with new ideas. The Franchisor has sole discretion on how money is spent, but good Franchisors will listen carefully to their Franchisees’ ideas – and go along with them if possible.
Franchisors who control only part of the city will work with other Franchisors on advertising media such as Metro Yellow Pages and even radio and TV. Decisions are made in consultation, with the majority deciding.
Franchisors are also responsible for providing Franchisees with a ‘Work Availability Guarantee’, by which Franchisees who earn less than a certain amount in the early days are paid by the Franchisor to do free promotional work. This is actually a highly effective form of advertising, since such promotions normally bring in a substantial amount of paid work. In practice, because there is generally plentiful work for most Divisions, very few Franchisees ever make a claim.
